How Lantern Moon Needles Are Made
Lantern Moon knitting needles are crafted in twenty-nine steps to produce an heirloom quality tool. Made from select hardwoods, these knitting needles use a “liquid silk” finishing process which guarantees an enjoyable knitting experience and prevents the splintering that can be experienced in a wooden needle.
Straight Needle Choices
We carry two different knitting needle lengths. 10″ length needles are great for projects like scarves or baby sweaters. 14″ length needles work well on adult size sweaters, shawls, and strip afghans. Anything larger should be worked on the Lantern Moon circular needles, which we also carry.
We carry three different types of Lantern Moon hardwood needles–rosewood, ebony, and palm. Each type of wood is beautiful and all three give you an exemplary experience. These knitting needles have lovely fluted tops in contrasting woods. Ebony has blondwood tops, palm has rosewood tops and rosewood size 3-9 has ebony tops and size 10-19 has palm tops.
Woods Used in Lantern Moon Needles
Rosewood refers to any of a number of richly hued timbers, often brownish with darker veining, but found in many different hues. All rosewoods are strong and heavy, taking an excellent polish, and are beautifully suited for knitting needles and crochet hooks.
Lantern Moon ebony knitting needles are in 10″. Ebony is a very dense black wood. Ebony has a very high density and will sink in water. Its fine texture, and very smooth finish when polished, have made it very valuable as an ornamental wood.
Palm wood or coconut timber is a hardwood-substitute from coconut palm trees. It is highly striated with darker colors and most unusual. It is a new timber resource that comes from plantation crops and offers an alternative to rainforest timber.

Lantern Moon rosewood knitting needles are in 10″ and 14″ lengths with ebony or palm fluted tops and come in sizes 3,4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 10.5, 11, 13, 15, 17, and 19. Sizes 3-9 have the ebony fluted tops and sizes 10-19 have the palm fluted top.
